According to the scriptures, Dhanvantari was born on this day, hence it is called Dhanteras. Lord Dhanvanti had appeared with nectar Kalash during sea churning, hence this is the tradition of buying utensils on this day. But there are many stories related to Dhanteras that show why Dhanteras is celebrated before Diwali. On the day of Dhanteras, Lord Dhanvantri was born with a golden Kalash and originated from Sagar Manthan. Dhanvantari made the deities immortal with the nectar filled in the kalash. Two days after the arrival of Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi appeared. Therefore, the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated two days before Deepawali.
God is the Vaidya of the Dhanvantri deities. Their devotion and worship get health benefits. It is believed that Lord Dhanvantari is the Anshavatra of Vishnu. Lord Vishnu had embraced Dhanvantari for the expansion and spread of medical science in the world.
With Dhanteras, the Diwali of 5-day Diwali starts. Dhanteras have worshiped Lord Shiva. People buy some new things on this day. This time Dhanteras is on 5th November. On the day of Dhanteras, it is considered auspicious to buy gold and silver etc. and if these things are bought in auspicious yoga, then it is more fruitful.
